# Connect an MCP client

> Add Locus to Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor, Cline, or another MCP client and sign in through your browser.

Add the Locus MCP server to the chat or coding app you already use, then approve it in your browser. Use this when you work with the agent yourself. For an agent that runs unattended, use an [agent key](https://docs.paywithlocus.com/locus-pro/agent-keys.md) instead.

> Agents: the exact contract for this feature is at [https://paywithlocus.com/agent/mcp.md](https://paywithlocus.com/agent/mcp.md). Start from [https://paywithlocus.com/agent/index.md](https://paywithlocus.com/agent/index.md) if you are implementing Locus.

## How it works

Your client starts a standard OAuth sign-in. Locus shows you a consent screen, you approve, and the client receives a token it stores and refreshes on its own. You never paste a key.

```mermaid theme={null}
sequenceDiagram
  actor You
  participant C as MCP client
  participant L as Locus
  You->>C: Add the Locus MCP URL
  C->>L: Start sign-in
  L->>You: Consent screen
  You->>L: Approve access and tool set
  L-->>C: Token
  C->>L: Tool calls with the token
  Note over C,L: The client refreshes the token for you
```

* The consent screen shows the workspace and the access the client asks for.
* If your workspace has tool sets, you choose the set this connection uses.
* Signed-in clients appear under **Connect → API keys** in **Connected apps**.

## Set up your client

In your workspace, **Connect → Set up** walks you through each client. You can also follow the steps below. Want the skills too? The [Locus plugin](https://docs.paywithlocus.com/locus-pro/locus-plugin.md) installs the connection and skills together. You only need one connection.

> [tab] Claude Cowork / claude.ai
>
> Open **Customize → Connectors → Yours → Add connector → Add custom
> connector**. Name it `Locus`, enter the MCP server URL above, choose
> **Connect**, and complete browser sign-in.
>
> Then open **Customize → Skills → Yours → Add skill → Upload skill** and
> upload all three archives:
>
> * [locus.zip](https://paywithlocus.com/.well-known/agent-skills/locus.zip)
> * [locus-setup.zip](https://paywithlocus.com/.well-known/agent-skills/locus-setup.zip)
> * [locus-workflows.zip](https://paywithlocus.com/.well-known/agent-skills/locus-workflows.zip)
>
> Claude Code uses the [plugin](https://docs.paywithlocus.com/locus-pro/locus-plugin.md) instead.

> [tab] ChatGPT.com
>
> Enable Developer mode under **Settings → Apps → Advanced settings**,
> then open **Plugins → Create app**. Enter the MCP server URL above, choose
> OAuth, and finish Locus sign-in. Start a **Work** task, open **Plugins**,
> and select **Locus Pro** before asking it to use a tool.
>
> ChatGPT's Skills picker may not accept the skill archives. The MCP app
> still works; your agent can call `get_locus_guide` for the same guides.

> [tab] Claude Code CLI
>
> ```bash theme={null}
> claude mcp add --transport http locus-pro \
>   https://api.paywithlocus.com/api/credits/mcp
> ```
>
> Run `/mcp`, select `locus-pro`, and choose **Authenticate**.

> [tab] Codex (MCP only)
>
> ```bash theme={null}
> codex mcp add locus-pro --url https://api.paywithlocus.com/api/credits/mcp
> codex mcp login locus-pro --scopes mcp:read,mcp:execute,offline_access
> ```
>
> This adds the MCP tools only. Install the [Codex plugin](https://docs.paywithlocus.com/locus-pro/locus-plugin.md)
> to add the skills as well.

> [tab] Cursor
>
> Add this to `~/.cursor/mcp.json`, enable the server, and follow the OAuth prompt:
>
> ```json title="~/.cursor/mcp.json" theme={null}
> {
>   "mcpServers": {
>     "locus-pro": {
>       "url": "https://api.paywithlocus.com/api/credits/mcp"
>     }
>   }
> }
> ```

> [tab] Cline
>
> ```bash theme={null}
> cline mcp install locus --transport http \
>   https://api.paywithlocus.com/api/credits/mcp
> ```
>
> Choose **Remote (HTTP)** and **OAuth**, leave the client ID blank, and
> complete browser sign-in. Then install the skills and start a new Cline
> session:
>
> ```bash theme={null}
> npx skills add locus-technologies/locus-pro-plugin
> ```
>
> Select `locus`, `locus-setup`, and `locus-workflows` when prompted.

> [tab] Other clients
>
> Add the URL as a Streamable HTTP server without an authorization header.
> Your client handles OAuth sign-in and token refresh.

> [!TIP]
>
> The [Locus CLI](https://docs.paywithlocus.com/locus-pro/cli.md#connect-an-mcp-client) can print a ready-to-paste
> configuration for several clients with `locus mcp config --client <name>`.

## Try it

Ask your agent for an outcome:

```text title="Send to your agent" wrap theme={null}
Find recent company news and funding information for this prospect.
Cite the sources and show what the research cost.
```

See [Paid tool calls](https://docs.paywithlocus.com/locus-pro/paid-tool-calls.md) for how price caps and approvals work.
